A zero turn mower is a mower that can spin 180 degrees within it's own footprint. This unparalleled maneuverability means obstacles can be negotiated with ease. When seated in a zero turn mower you will rarely find yourself having to back up.
Zero turn radius mowers (sometimes called ZTRs) are powered by a rear engine, unlike standard front engined lawn tractors. ZTRs feature independent rear-steering wheels which give them the ability to turn on a dime. Unlike standard lawn tractors, zero turn mowers feature levers for steering. This often feels strange at first to the new operator, but within minutes it begins to feel intuitive and after a few lawns are mowed it becomes second nature.
Zero turn radius mowers also have the added benefit of vastly reducing operator fatigue. Moving from a pushing to a riding zero turn radius mower will seem like paradise. For those people who prefer the standing vantage point when mowing, various manufacturers produce stand on ZTRs for the ultimate in viewing angles (at the expense of some comfort). Stand on models have the added benefit of a reduced footprint, meaning they are easier to transport and can fit into smaller spaces.
Zero turn mowers come in a variety of cutting deck deck sizes. Different cutting deck sizes appeal to different users for different reasons, For the professional landscaper a 72" cutting deck will increase productivity, meaning more time for other jobs or more leisure time. Professional landscapers will also be drawn to the quality of cut produced by a zero turn radius mower.
For the homeowner a smaller deck size would usually be more than adequate - some manufacturers produce models with a 36" for example. This is perfect for the owner with a smallish yard, or a yard with many obstcles. The homeowner with a larger yard might seek the midground, such as a mower sporting a 50" cutting deck.
Zero turn mowers save a lot of time since they are virtually always cutting grass, rather than being constantly positioned to cut. Many users report that they have, at a minimum, halved their cutting times.
ZTR Mowers first emerged as a tool for industrial use. Their huge benefits were soon noticed, particularly their flexibility of movement and their use became widespread. Modern zero turn mowers are the descendants of such industrial cutting machines.
Some manufacturers employ a pivoting rear axle assembly to steer. The manufacturer Husqvarna is known for this. More common is steering via the rotation of one or both of the rear wheels.
A ZTR needn't be prohibitively expensive. There is a thriving market in used zero turn mowers, as well as great deals available on new models. They also hold their value relatively well, meaning you can recoup a decent percentage of your investment should your needs change.
